Gulf job market shrinks, emigration suffers |
|
The job market in the Gulf region has suffered and this has cut down the rate of emigration. The global recession has also adversely affected the market in Middle East and the Gulf nations and as such there has been a shortage of jobs. This has affected Indian workers to a great extent as they are not getting adequate jobs to fulfill their needs.
According to a government report, the Gulf, which once used to be a prized job destination for Indians, has lost its place. According to an official data which was published by the Indian affairs ministry during the meeting with state governments, the rate of Indian workers emigrating to the Gulf has fallen by around 30 percent.
Nevertheless, compared to some other countries, the Gulf region is still a major source of revenue and opportunity in the international job market. Both skilled and semi skilled workers emigrate to the Gulf countries every year in order to bag a good job. The reports published by the ministry stated that around 840,000 semi skilled workers had gone to work in the Gulf countries last year.
Meanwhile, the Indian government is thinking about an all over plan to help Indian workers who are based outside the country. K. Mohandas, Overseas Indian Affairs Secretary said that there needs to be a state level nodal department which will look after the welfare of the Indians who are based outside the country. The main function of the nodal department will be to supervise the aspect of legal migration.
The government will also try to provide more qualitative skills to the employees who are looking for overseas job opportunities. There will also be a database of skilled workers, orientation training prior to departure and so on. Action will also be taken against travel agents and recruiting agents who are not registered. |
